International Women’s Day 2026

Progress celebrated but leadership momentum slows

This year’s International Women’s Day on 8 March was an opportunity to celebrate women’s achievements while also reflecting on the work that still needs to be done. The 2026 theme, “Give to Gain,” highlights the idea that when individuals and organisations share opportunities, support and knowledge, progress towards gender equality accelerates. When women are supported and empowered, the benefits extend across workplaces, communities and economies.

The theme encourages people to actively contribute to women’s advancement, whether through mentorship, career opportunities, advocacy or collaboration. In simple terms, the message is that by giving support and resources, everyone gains from a more inclusive and equitable workforce. More information about the campaign can be found on the International Women's Day website

However, new data released around International Women’s Day suggests that progress in leadership representation may be slowing. Research from LinkedIn shows that women’s advancement into senior leadership roles has slowed across 16 countries since 2023, including the UK. Globally, women accounted for just under 33 percent of new leadership hires in 2025, a slight drop compared with the previous year. The analysis is outlined in LinkedIn’s newsroom coverage

Despite women making up around 44 percent of the global workforce, they hold only about 31 percent of senior leadership positions, according to LinkedIn’s latest workforce insights

The picture varies across markets. While several countries saw slower progress, Spain recorded a noticeable increase in female leadership hiring, demonstrating that progress is still possible when organisations maintain a focus on inclusive hiring practices.

International Women’s Day therefore highlights both celebration and challenge. The “Give to Gain” message encourages businesses to think about how they can actively contribute to change. This includes sharing opportunities, investing in leadership development and ensuring diverse talent is visible to employers.

Platforms that connect international talent with employers can play a role in this process. For example, MultilingualVacancies.com helps multilingual professionals access global career opportunities by connecting candidates with companies seeking language skills and international expertise. By widening access to international roles and promoting diverse candidates, platforms like this can support women pursuing leadership careers in global organisations.

Ultimately, the message of International Women’s Day 2026 is clear. Progress towards gender equality requires more than recognition. It requires action, collaboration and a willingness to give opportunities to others. In line with the “Give to Gain” theme, when organisations invest in women’s careers and leadership potential, the benefits extend far beyond the workplace.
